From Behind the Camera to Behind the Closing Table: Why I Became a REALTOR in Central Texas

For a long time, I thought I’d always stay behind the scenes. I loved marketing. I loved branding. I loved creating content, building visibility, and helping agents at REMAX Temple-Belton Properties market themselves online. But becoming an actual REALTOR myself? That felt terrifying.

At the time, I had already spent years working in real estate marketing in Temple. I understood the industry from the office side. I knew contracts existed. I knew transactions could get complicated. I knew the hours could be long and unpredictable. And honestly? Watching REALTORS work up close gave me a very realistic understanding of how hard this career actually is.

People see the fun parts online:

  • the closing photos
  • the pretty houses
  • the “just listed” signs
  • the exciting moments

But behind the scenes, real estate requires an incredible amount of problem solving, communication, emotional intelligence, marketing knowledge, negotiation skills, patience, and grit. Especially in a market as unique and fast-growing as Central Texas. At some point though, something shifted for me.

The more I marketed homes…
The more I worked around agents…
The more involved I became in the business…

…the more I started realizing I wanted to do more than just market real estate.

I wanted to help people through the process myself.

I wanted to sit at the closing table.
I wanted to guide buyers and sellers.
I wanted to build relationships directly with clients.
And honestly? I wanted to see if I could build something of my own.

So I talked to my grandparents — Sue and Terry Lockett, or as I call them, Nanny and Peepaw. (pictured)

Real estate has been part of our family for years through REMAX Temple-Belton Properties, and they helped walk me through the process of getting licensed in Texas. And then…

I jumped.

And WOW was getting started hard. 😂 There’s this misconception sometimes that if you grow up around real estate, things automatically come easy. Absolutely not. Having family in the business gave me knowledge and mentorship, but I still had to:

  • learn contracts
  • build a client base
  • earn trust
  • market myself
  • develop negotiation skills
  • survive commission-only income
  • learn how to manage transactions
  • navigate difficult situations
  • and figure out who I wanted to be as an agent

Those early years taught me more than I could ever put into words. But they also shaped the REALTOR I am today. One of the biggest advantages I realized I had was my background in marketing and branding. Because modern real estate is no longer just about listing homes in the MLS. Today, successful real estate marketing in Temple, Belton, Salado, and across Central Texas requires visibility. It requires strategy. It requires understanding:

  • social media marketing
  • video content
  • SEO
  • YouTube
  • digital advertising
  • branding
  • photography
  • storytelling
  • and community engagement

That’s why I approach real estate differently now. I don’t just market houses. I market lifestyles. I market communities. I market the feeling of “home.” Whether I’m creating videos about:

  • moving to Salado, Texas
  • neighborhoods in Temple
  • local businesses in Belton
  • land and ranch properties in Central Texas
  • first-time homebuyer tips
  • or community events happening around Bell County

…it all ties back into helping people feel connected to where they live. That’s the part of this career I love the most. The relationships. Over the years, clients have become friends. Referrals have become repeat clients. Community connections have turned into lifelong relationships. That’s something I never fully understood when I first got licensed. Real estate isn’t just about houses. It’s about people navigating major life moments:

  • marriages
  • divorces
  • military moves
  • growing families
  • downsizing
  • grief
  • new jobs
  • financial goals
  • fresh starts

Being trusted during those moments is something I never take lightly. Now, after more than 7 years as a full-time REALTOR in Central Texas, I can confidently say this career changed my life. And while getting in front of the camera originally felt uncomfortable… It ended up helping me find exactly where I was supposed to be.
