Before I Sold Homes, I Marketed Them: How Social Media Changed Real Estate in Central Texas

Before I ever unlocked a door for a showing, negotiated an offer, or sat at a closing table, I was behind the scenes helping market homes at REMAX Temple-Belton Properties. Looking back now, I had a front row seat to one of the biggest shifts the real estate industry has ever seen. Social media changed everything.

When I started working in marketing for our Temple real estate office nearly 10 years ago, Facebook business pages were still fairly new territory for a lot of agents. Instagram wasn’t what it is now. TikTok didn’t exist yet. And video marketing? That was really outside most agents’ comfort zones.

At the time, a lot of real estate marketing still revolved around:

  • Newspaper ads
  • Print magazines
  • Flyers
  • Postcards
  • Email blasts
  • Yard signs

And while those things still have value today, the industry was clearly shifting toward digital marketing and online visibility. I remember trying to encourage agents at REMAX Temple-Belton Properties to participate more in social media content. Some were excited. Some were skeptical. Some probably thought I was completely nuts for insisting people wanted to watch videos about real estate online. 😂

At times it honestly felt like I was swimming upstream. But I believed in it. I saw how social media could help REALTORS connect with people in a more authentic way. Instead of perfectly polished ads, people wanted personality. They wanted education. They wanted local knowledge. They wanted to know who they were trusting with one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.

And eventually, video marketing started exploding.

That’s when things really clicked for me. I helped create content for our office, worked on growing our online presence, and eventually helped launch the office YouTube page. At first, I focused heavily on filming other people because being on camera myself felt terrifying. Which is funny now considering how much video content I create these days. 😂

But somewhere along the way, I realized something important: If I truly believed video marketing worked… I needed to stop waiting for someone else to do it. So I got in front of the camera myself. And honestly? That decision completely changed my career. Today, video and social media marketing are some of the biggest tools I use as a REALTOR serving Temple, Belton, Salado, and the surrounding Central Texas area. Because real estate marketing today is so much more than putting a listing into the MLS and hoping buyers magically appear.

Modern real estate marketing includes:

  • Professional video tours
  • YouTube marketing
  • Instagram Reels
  • TikTok videos
  • Drone footage
  • SEO blogging
  • Community-focused content
  • Social media advertising
  • Email marketing
  • Local business features
  • Lifestyle storytelling

Buyers expect it now! People moving to Central Texas want to see the neighborhoods. They want to understand the lifestyle. They want information about schools, commute times, coffee shops, restaurants, local events, and community culture before they ever schedule a showing. That’s one of the reasons I create so much local content now.

Whether I’m talking about:

  • neighborhoods in Salado
  • local businesses in Temple
  • real estate tips for buyers and sellers
  • new construction homes in Central Texas
  • Bell County growth and development
  • or even featuring adoptable pets from the shelter

…it all comes back to the same thing:

Connection.

People don’t just buy houses.
They buy communities.
They buy lifestyles.
They buy the feeling of home.

And social media allows REALTORS to communicate that in ways traditional marketing simply never could. I’m incredibly thankful I got to learn marketing from inside REMAX Temple-Belton Properties before becoming a licensed REALTOR myself. It gave me a completely different perspective on branding, visibility, and how to help listings stand out in an increasingly competitive online world. It also taught me something really important:

You can have the best personality, the best service, and the best intentions in the world… but if nobody sees your listings online, you’re missing opportunities for your clients.

That’s why marketing still matters so much to me today.

Not because it’s trendy.
Not because it’s flashy.
But because exposure matters.

And when my clients trust me to market one of their biggest investments, I take that responsibility seriously.
