Haunted History: The Secrets of South Belton Cemetery

Hey y’all! If you’re looking for a mix of deep Central Texas history and a side of spooky vibes, you’ve hit the jackpot. We are diving into the legends of South Belton Cemetery, one of the oldest and most storied graveyards in Bell County.

Whether you’re a history buff or a fan of the supernatural, this spot is a “must-visit” for anyone exploring the Bell and Milam County area. Let’s spill the tea on the spirits that call this frontier landmark home!

A Glimpse into the Past [00:00]

Founded in the early 1800s, South Belton Cemetery is the final resting place for the settlers and soldiers who built our community from the ground up. Walking through these grounds, you’re literally stepping back into the era of the Texas frontier.

But hold onto your hats, because once the sun goes down, the atmosphere shifts from peaceful to bone-chilling. [00:24] The wind starts to whisper names of those who braved Texas storms and wild frontier life centuries ago.

Soldiers from Both Sides [00:32]

One of the most unique things about this cemetery is the soil shared by soldiers who were once bitter rivals.

  • Captain Robert M. White: A Confederate soldier who led Company H of the Sixth Texas Cavalry. [00:40]
  • Private Charles Peters: The only known Union soldier buried here. [00:50]

It’s a powerful reminder of how deep our history goes and how, in the end, we all share the same Texas land.

The Dark Side of Belton: The Vigilante Mob of 1874 [01:06]

If you really want to get your “bad-assery” on, you have to hear about Belton’s lawless days. In 1874, this was a dusty, angry frontier town. After folks lost faith in the legal system, a vigilante mob stormed the Bell County jail while the sheriff was away. [01:20]

Nine prisoners—accused of everything from horse theft to murder—were dragged into the street and executed. While there was a plan for a mass grave, a judge eventually ordered separate burials right here at South Belton Cemetery. [01:39] Talk about a heavy history!
