If you’re moving to Central Texas, there’s a crash course you didn’t know you needed: local town name pronunciation. Being a REMAX REALTOR® in Bell County means I’ve watched out-of-towners absolutely struggle with our Czech-influenced small towns – and I love every second of it. Being a REALTOR® in Central Texas is about more than just finding the perfect kitchen island or checking the foundation. It’s about survival – specifically, surviving the absolute tongue-twisters that are our local town names.
I recently put my incredible REMAX referral partners from all over the globe to the test! I sent a list of our local “East Bell County specialties” to agents from Phoenix to Rhode Island to see if they could hack it. Let’s just say… we might need to get some of them a translator (or a Shiner) before they visit. [00:06]

Your Central Texas Town Names Pronunciation Guide
If you’re moving to the CTX area, consider this your official pronunciation cheat sheet. We have a heavy Czech influence out here, which means the vowels are doing whatever they want, and we just have to follow along.
1. Salado
- How outsiders say it: Sah-lah-doh (like a salad… but fancy?). [01:39]
- The Texas Way: Sa-LAY-doh. Simple, classic, and if you say it wrong, we’ll know you’re from California immediately.
2. Heidenheimer
- How outsiders say it: High-den-hy-mer. [02:13]
- The Texas Way: Hi-den-hammer. It sounds like a sturdy tool or a very specific type of German beer. Either way, it’s a local legend.
3. Westphalia
- How outsiders say it: West-fail-ya. [02:42]
- The Texas Way: West-vae-lee-ah. Or, if you’ve lived here since the 1950s, it’s just West-vae-yuh. Don’t ask why; just roll with it.
4. Oneaville
- How outsiders say it: One-a-ville. [03:12]
- The Texas Way: O-ween-na-ville. It’s like a tiny, rural, Central Texas version of Halloween, but all year round.
5. Zabcikville
- How outsiders say it: Panicked silence followed by “Zeb-ick-ville?” [04:06]
- The Texas Way: Zab-zick-ville. It looks like a Scrabble board fell over, but it’s actually a beautiful piece of our Czech heritage.
6. Ratibor
- How outsiders say it: Rat-i-bore. [04:26]
- The Texas Way: Rat-a-bar. No, there are no actual rats in a bar (hopefully), but there is a whole lot of history!
