Spotlighting the Harker Heights Pet Adoption Center: A Story of Soul-Dogs and Second Chances

If you’ve been following my social media lately, you’ve probably seen some adorable new faces popping up. No, I haven’t added ten more dogs to my household (though my husband might tell you I’ve tried). I have started a new mission called the HHPAC Animal Spotlight – a project to help shelter dogs at the Harker Heights Pet Adoption Center find their forever homes right here in the Temple-Belton area.

This project is deeply personal to me. As a native Texan and long-time resident of Central Texas, I’ve always believed in giving back to the community that raised me. But my connection to the Harker Heights Pet Adoption Center goes back to a very special Saturday and a dog named Baxter.

Why We Chose to Adopt a Dog in Harker Heights, TX

When my husband and I decided to add a furry member to our family, we knew we wanted to adopt. While I’ll never judge anyone’s path to finding a pet, for me, there is something incredibly rewarding about giving a shelter dog a forever home.

We spent an entire Saturday visiting every animal shelter in Bell County – Temple, Belton, you name it. Finally, we pulled into the Harker Heights Pet Adoption Center on Indian Trail. Right away, I was blown away. It didn’t feel like a typical shelter. It was clean, colorful, and they even had soft music playing for the dogs. The staff was incredibly kind, but after walking the rows, we hadn’t found that “spark” yet.

Meet Baxter Ray: From Shelter Dog to Local Legend

Before leaving, I asked if there were any dogs not in the main area. The staff mentioned a Miniature Pinscher who was currently on a “stray hold” to give his owners a chance to claim him.

My husband knew it was game over. My first dog, Genevieve, was a Min Pin who lived a beautiful 17 years, and I’ve always had a soft spot for the breed. Out walks this tiny ball of energy they called “Blimpy.” He was full of hugs, kisses, and so much life.

We had to wait until Monday to see if he’d be claimed. I’ll be honest – I was selfishly praying his owners wouldn’t show up. That Monday morning, we arrived at the shelter three hours before they opened. We weren’t the only ones waiting, but we were the “crazy ones” who sat in the parking lot to make sure he became ours.

Today, Baxter Ray is my soul-dog, my side-kick, and my literal child. He’s a local favorite at Mobi Dog Spa’s Tea Cup Lounge and even had his own boutique, “Baxter’s Closet,” for a few years. He’s too smart for his own good and has never met a stranger. I truly cannot imagine my life without him.

The HHPAC Animal Spotlight: Paying It Forward in 2026

Fast forward to February 2026. I was back at the Harker Heights Pet Adoption Center with my mom, who was looking for a companion after losing her sweet Yorkie-poo in December. While we didn’t find her match that day, I felt that familiar pull on my heartstrings.

Dogs deserve backyards to run in and couches to sleep on, not shelter runs. That’s why I’ve decided to use my marketing background and social media platform for good.

My goal: To spotlight the long-stay dogs and the pets who might be overlooked at HHPAC, helping them find the same happily-ever-after that Baxter found with me.
