As someone who was born and raised in Temple and now helps buyers relocate here full-time, I can confidently say there’s a lot more to this city than people realize. Temple has transformed into one of Central Texas’ fastest-growing communities while still holding onto the hometown charm that makes it special.

A City Built on History
Temple wasn’t always the thriving city you see today. Founded in 1881 as a railroad town along the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railway, the railroad is the very reason Temple exists.
Even today, you can still see that history throughout downtown. Historic buildings, brick streets, public art, and the railroad heritage all help give Temple its unique character.
For history lovers, Temple offers the perfect mix of old Texas charm and modern growth.
Downtown Temple is Full of Personality
One of my favorite places in the city is Downtown Temple.
Unlike many downtown districts that have struggled over the years, Downtown Temple continues to grow with locally owned restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, breweries, seasonal events, and beautiful murals scattered throughout.
It’s also one of the most walkable parts of Temple, making it a great place to spend an afternoon shopping, grabbing lunch, or attending one of the city’s many community events.
If you enjoy supporting local businesses, you’ll probably fall in love with downtown just like I have.
Temple is a Healthcare Destination
If there’s one thing Temple is known for throughout Texas, it’s healthcare.
Temple is home to one of the largest medical communities in the state, making it a destination for patients and healthcare professionals alike.
Some of Temple’s largest employers include:
- Baylor Scott & White Medical Center
- McLane Children’s Medical Center
- Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Center
- Temple College
Baylor Scott & White isn’t just a hospital. It’s also a teaching hospital, research facility, and nationally recognized medical center that serves patients from across Texas and beyond.
Temple College has been educating students since 1926 and continues to prepare many of the nurses, therapists, and healthcare professionals who stay and work right here in Temple.
McLane Children’s Medical Center provides specialized pediatric care for families throughout Central Texas, while the VA Medical Center makes Temple an attractive place for many veterans and military retirees.
It’s no surprise that healthcare continues to be one of the biggest reasons people relocate to Temple.
Temple’s Economy Continues to Grow
Healthcare may be the city’s largest employer, but it’s certainly not the only reason Temple continues to expand.
Located directly on Interstate 35, Temple sits almost perfectly between Austin and Waco while offering convenient access to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
That central location has attracted major employers in manufacturing, logistics, and distribution.
Large employers include companies like Walmart Distribution, Wilsonart, McLane Company, and H-E-B.
Having a diverse economy means Temple isn’t dependent on one industry, creating more stability and employment opportunities for residents.
Yes… We Have Buc-ee’s
I know…
It’s “just” a gas station.
But if you’re moving to Texas, stopping at Buc-ee’s is practically a rite of passage.
Whether you’re grabbing fresh brisket, Beaver Nuggets, homemade fudge, or simply experiencing what many consider the cleanest restrooms in Texas, Buc-ee’s has become one of Temple’s most recognizable landmarks.
Trust me… you’ll understand after your first visit.
West Temple Continues to Boom
If I’m helping someone relocate to Temple, one of the first areas they usually ask about is West Temple.
This area has experienced tremendous growth over the past several years and features:
- New construction neighborhoods
- Modern shopping centers
- Popular restaurants
- Grocery stores
- Walking trails
- Parks
- Easy access to Belton
Homes in West Temple often command higher prices than other parts of the city, but many buyers appreciate the newer floor plans, larger neighborhoods, and convenient location.
One thing many buyers don’t realize is that some West Temple neighborhoods are actually zoned to Belton ISD, even though the homes have Temple addresses. That’s something I always encourage buyers to verify during their home search.
Temple Schools & Friday Night Lights
Football is a tradition in Temple.
Temple High School has produced generations of Wildcats, and Friday night football is still a major community event.
Whether your family chooses Temple ISD, Belton ISD, or another nearby district, you’ll find plenty of educational opportunities throughout the area.
Parks, Recreation & Family Fun
Temple offers much more than many people expect.
Some local favorites include:
- Lions Junction Family Water Park
- Pepper Creek Trail
- Crossroads Park
- Miller Park
- Downtown festivals
- Community markets
- Concerts at Santa Fe Plaza
Whether you enjoy walking trails, outdoor recreation, or family-friendly events, there’s almost always something happening somewhere around town.
Location is One of Temple’s Biggest Advantages
Another reason so many people choose Temple is its location.
From Temple you can reach:
- Austin in about one hour
- Waco in approximately 45 minutes
- Belton Lake in just minutes
- Salado in about 15 minutes
That makes Temple a great home base for commuters while still offering a more affordable housing market than many larger Texas cities.
Is Temple, TX a Good Place to Live?
As someone who’s spent my entire life here, I may be a little biased.
But I’ve watched Temple grow from a quiet railroad and healthcare town into one of Central Texas’ most desirable places to call home.
You’ll find historic neighborhoods, newer subdivisions, excellent healthcare, strong job opportunities, beautiful parks, local businesses, and a welcoming community that’s still growing every year.
