Living in Belton, Texas has become one of the most popular places to call home in Central Texas. If you’re considering moving here, this guide covers everything you should know before making the move. There’s a good chance you’ve come across Belton, Texas. As someone who’s lived in the Temple-Belton area my entire life (and yes…I’m a proud Belton High School Class of 2013 graduate!), I can tell you that Belton has a personality all its own.
It has the charm of a small town while still offering many of the conveniences people are looking for when relocating. Whether you’re moving for work, military orders, retirement, or simply a change of pace, here’s what you should know about living in Belton.
A Town That Feels Like Home
One of my favorite things about Belton is that it still feels like a community. You’ll find neighbors who know each other, locally owned restaurants, community events throughout the year, and plenty of opportunities to get involved.
Even though the area continues to grow, Belton has done a great job of holding onto the small-town atmosphere that so many people are looking for.
Entertainment Without Leaving Town
A major attraction in Belton is the Huntington Bank Center, which many longtime locals still lovingly call “The Expo.”
Throughout the year, it hosts:
- PRCA Rodeos
- The Central Texas State Fair
- Concerts
- Comedy shows
- Family events
- Trade shows and expos
I’ve personally seen artists like Miranda Lambert, Christian concerts, comedy acts, and plenty of other events there over the years. It’s one of those places that always seems to have something happening.
Who’s Moving to Belton?
Over the years, I’ve helped people relocate from all over the country who wanted to live in Belton.
Some of the most common buyers include:
- Military families stationed at Fort Cavazos
- Healthcare professionals
- Commuters working in Temple, Killeen, or Austin
- Retirees looking for a slower pace
- Families wanting highly rated schools and a strong sense of community
Belton’s location makes it easy to get around Central Texas while still enjoying a quieter lifestyle.
Belton ISD
Education is one of the biggest reasons many families choose Belton.
When I graduated, Belton only had one high school. Today, the district has continued to grow with both Belton High School and Lake Belton High School serving the community.
Belton ISD is known for strong academics, athletics, fine arts, and a wide variety of extracurricular opportunities.
Outdoor Recreation
If you love being outside, Belton is hard to beat.
Some local favorites include:
- Belton Lake
- Chalk Ridge Falls Park
- Yettie Polk Park
- Heritage Park
- Miller Springs Nature Center
- Numerous walking and biking trails
Whether you’re into boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking, or simply enjoying a Texas sunset, you’ll find plenty of opportunities here.
Downtown Belton
Downtown Belton is one of my favorite parts of the city.
You’ll find:
- Local boutiques
- Coffee shops
- Restaurants
- Seasonal festivals
- Historic architecture
- Community events throughout the year
It has a welcoming atmosphere that’s difficult to describe until you’ve experienced it yourself.
Shopping and Everyday Conveniences
Belton continues to grow, and with that growth has come more shopping, restaurants, grocery stores, medical services, and everyday conveniences.
If you can’t find something in Belton, Temple is only minutes away, giving you access to even more retail, healthcare, and entertainment options.
Is Living in Belton, Texas Right for You?
Belton isn’t trying to be Austin, Dallas, or Houston – and honestly, that’s part of its charm.
If you’re looking for:
- A slower pace of life
- Great schools
- Outdoor recreation
- Friendly neighbors
- A strong community feel
- Easy access to larger cities without living in one
…Belton may be exactly what you’re looking for.
Now, if you’re hoping for a nightlife scene that stays busy until 2:00 a.m., Belton probably isn’t going to check that box. Things tend to quiet down in the evenings, and that’s exactly why many people love living here.
Pros and Cons of Living in Belton, Texas
Like any city, Belton has its strengths and a few things you’ll want to consider before making the move. Here’s my honest take as someone who’s lived in Central Texas my entire life.
Pros of Living in Belton, Texas
Excellent Schools
Belton ISD has a strong community reputation, offering quality academics, athletics, fine arts, and career programs. It’s one of the biggest reasons families choose to call Belton home.
Small-Town Charm
Belton has grown over the years, but it still feels like a close-knit community. You’ll find local events, friendly neighbors, and a historic downtown that gives the city plenty of character.
Outdoor Recreation
From Belton Lake and Chalk Ridge Falls to Miller Springs Nature Center, there are countless ways to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you like hiking, boating, kayaking, or fishing, you’ll never be far from an adventure.
Convenient Location
Belton sits along i35, making it easy to reach Temple, Killeen, Fort Cavazos/Fort Hood, Waco, and even Austin for day trips.
Strong Housing Options
Whether you’re looking for your first home, a new construction neighborhood, or historic property, Belton offers a wide variety of homes to fit different budgets and lifestyles.
Growing Community
New restaurants, shopping, medical facilities, and businesses continue to open, giving residents more conveniences without losing the city’s welcoming feel.
Cons of Living in Belton, Texas
Hot Summers
Let’s be honest…Texas summers are no joke. Triple-digit temperatures are common, so you’ll definitely appreciate good air conditioning and maybe a day on the lake!
Continued Growth Means More Traffic
Belton continues to grow every year. While traffic is nothing like Austin or Dallas, you’ll notice busier roads during peak commuting hours and around major construction projects.
Limited Nightlife
If you’re looking for a bustling nightlife scene, Belton probably isn’t the place for you. Most entertainment revolves around community events, local restaurants, and outdoor activities.
Property Taxes
Like many areas in Texas, property taxes can be higher than what buyers from other states are used to. It’s something I always discuss with clients during the home-buying process so there are no surprises.
Smaller Shopping Selection
Belton has plenty of everyday shopping and dining, but for larger retail centers or specialty stores, many residents head south to Austin.
Overall
If you’re looking for a friendly community, highly rated schools, easy access to outdoor recreation, and a slower pace of life, Belton is a fantastic place to call home. While it may not have the nightlife or big-city feel of larger metro areas, many people see that as one of its greatest strengths.
